Dress Code

The University does not have a formal dress code. However, the Johnson School has adopted the following guidelines:

As a professional School, often you will come into contact with people who are Managers of considerable numbers of people or of huge investments of money. Others who visit the School seek to attract the young people who are graduating from the Johnson School, or they may be here to offer advice or help to them. In any of these cases, these guests will tend to rate the School's quality by the way its employees appear to them. They expect staff to appear as the professional people with whom they work.

Thus, in most respects, employees must dress as the people do in America's leading corporations. This does not require a large expenditure for expensive clothes. But it does rule out, except in unusual cases of severe weather or emergency projects, those garments that one might use at home during leisure hours.

Last, but not least, is hygiene. It is important that you are aware of the fact that perfumes, after shaves, body lotions, hair sprays, etc. may be a problem to anyone with asthma. Anything scented should be used sparingly and avoided altogether if you are sharing an office. Similarly, all of us must be conscious of body odor, halitosis and other unforgiving scents. Today, in many of the newer buildings, it is impossible to open windows and many of us are working in close quarters. All of us have a responsibility to be cognizant and understanding of those around us and responsible for our own hygiene.

These are general suggestions only. If you have particular questions, you should speak to your Manager for help in deciding what may or may not be appropriate.
