Frequently Asked Questions by Managers and OPI Employees

Frequently Asked Questions by Managers

What do I do when an employee submits a resignation?

Direct the employee to the Termination Information. Then, refer to the Employee Definitions. Once you determine whether you want to hire a Student, a Temporary Overtime Pay Eligible (OPE) Employee or a Temporary Overtime Pay Ineligible (OPI) Employee; or replace a Regular Part- or Full-Time Employee, you have two options:

How can I hire someone - quickly? I need help!

Don't panic! Call Human Resources at X5-5037 or e-mail them at HumanResources@johnson.cornell.edu for assistance.

Well, I hired the employee I wanted? Did I make the right decision? Did the new employee? Do we have an opportunity to look one another over and work together on a probationary basis? Is this possible? How do we go about it?

The above link will explain who has a probationary period and what is expected during this period, along with your responsibilities as a Hiring Supervisor.

I want to establish a new position. What do I need to do? Or one of my support staff told me that she saw a position in the Cornell Chronicle that is just like hers only with a higher classification. What can we do?

The following link will explain how to and what is involved in Establishing New Positions or Initiating a Position Classification Review.

My employee wants to talk with me! She's asking questions like, "How am I doing?" "What do I need to do to advance myself?" "Will I have an opportunity for a performance appraisal?" Do I have to talk with her? Can you help?

All employees should have an annual Performance Dialogue with their Supervisor to review their work and have an opportunity to respond. The Performance Dialogue should involve a conversation, not a lecture. This is sound management practice and mandatory. Human Resources will prompt you on either the employee's Anniversary Date - or, if you, as a Manager, notified Human Resources of another date on which you would like to do performance reviews - when the time approaches.

Do I need to do a Performance Dialogue on my employee if he/she has not been at the Johnson School for a full year?

A Performance Dialogue is required even if an employee has not been at the Johnson School for a full year. Supervisors should schedule informal reviews with any individual who joins the School within the fiscal year - between July 1st and June 30th. New nonexempt (OPE) employees have mandatory three-month Probationary Reviews which can be used in the first year of employment as a formal Performance Evaluation. Three-month Probationary Reviews are not required for exempt (OPI) employees, however, having a discussion with a new employee will help him/her better understand how they are doing, not to mention, will suffice for not having a formal Performance Evaluation on file.

My employee is always giving a 110%? I can always count on him. What can I do to show my appreciation and recognize him for his contribution?

The School boasts an aggressive Reward and Recognition Program. This link will provide you with information on how to acknowledge the contributions of those who report directly to you as well as those of others.

One of my new employees wants to take some vacation? Is this possible?

Sure, but the University does have some restrictions. Please refer to the Vacation and Sick Leave Accruals (OPE and OPI) section to ensure that the employee is eligible and has the appropriate time accrued or necessary paperwork filed.

Frequently Asked Questions by OPI Employees

I've been here several months and need to fly to Washington to visit my ailing parents. Can I use vacation time? How do I find out whether I have any vacation time accrued? How does it accrue?

The information you need can be found at Vacation and Sick Leave Accruals and OPI Accruals.
