Sabbatical Leave (Professorial)

Tenured faculty are eligible for a sabbatical leave after 12 consecutive semesters of teaching. Such leaves provide an opportunity for planned, active-status professorial effort to focus on, advance and freshen scholarship and open new avenues for research, teaching and outreach such that significant benefit accrues to the University's academic programs. The sabbatical may be taken at full salary for one semester or half-salary for two semesters or the entire academic year. Also, you may want to refer to the guidelines available on the Faculty Course Load Information page to remind you that the Dean may consider granting compensation for accrued teaching credit to be applied toward a faculty member's salary while on a full-year sabbatical leave or a reduced teaching load. The decision is within the sole discretion of the Dean, taking into account overall performance and other factors relevant to the faculty member's contribution to the School.

When applying for a sabbatical, write a memo to the Associate Dean detailing what you expect to accomplish during the sabbatical as well as the sabbatical's future value to the School and the University. Lay out your plans and indicate your preference for a one semester at full salary, or a full year at half salary. Also include what you will be doing during your leave and whether or not you will remain in Ithaca or go elsewhere.

The Academic Personnel Policy Office can approve up to three postponement credits for delay of sabbatical. Additional credits will not normally be approved. To access the governing details of the official policy, go to http://policy.cornell.edu/Vol6_2_1.cfm.

The Johnson School conducts a Pre-Sabbatical Review for any faculty member requesting a sabbatical who has not been reviewed within the past six (6) years, the Dean will appoint a committee to conduct a Pre-Sabbatical Leave Review. This review is intended to provide an independent assessment of the faculty member's ability to make a continued contribution to the research and teaching mission of the School. In this regard, the Dean will provide any guidance deemed necessary to restructuring the Sabbatical Leave to assure the future value of the faculty member to the School and the University. The process and procedures can be found in Appendix A of the Faculty By-Laws.
