Boardroom Studio

The Johnson School's Cornell-Queen's Executive MBA videoconferencing studio, located in B40 within Sage Hall, was completed on October 1, 2005 and conducted its inaugural broadcast on October 15, 2005. This state-of-the-art, real-time, interactive videoconferencing technology links Boardroom Learning Teams of 6-8 people each in cities across the United States and Canada. Participants see the professor, teaching materials, and classmates on other teams through the videoconferencing system on two large monitors. Questions and class discussion are coordinated through the One Touch control system that allows participants to electronically raise their hand so professors can call on them at appropriate times during the class session. The studio control room is staffed by a technician and program coordinator during broadcasts. This staff focuses on all the technical issues and the behind-the-scene administrative work while the professor is engaged in teaching activities. Professors do not have to focus on issues such as camera angles, switching video and audio sources, or any technical problems: instead, instructors can focus solely on the teaching material. A professor can poll participants, work on notes that are shared with the class via an overhead document camera, show electronic slides, and, using Smart board technology, can annotate the electronic slides. This medium of teaching is new to the Johnson School but has been in successful use by our partner, Queen’s University, in Canada since 1994.
