Public Access Defibrillation Program (PAD)

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) has been installed in Sage Hall. The University has approved a Public Access Defibrillation Program (PAD) coordinated by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. Alan Bova from Risk Management has been involved in the University's decision to go forward with this Program and has been supportive indicating "...the University is probably more liable not having the Program than having it. This is because PAD is a recognized standard across the Nation. New York State is actually one of the last states to recognize it."

The AED is located in the hallway just off the Atrium and Dining Room - adjacent to the Restrooms - on the First Floor of Sage. It is properly marked and available at all times.

AEDs can be found in most airports, malls and in all schools, just to name a few places. Rapid response time is crucial. With the AED, this is possible for someone who has not had the benefit of hours of training. Evidence has shown that if a person can be shocked within the first three (3) to five (5) minutes of their heart stopping, they have a much better chance of recovery. The AED allows the "lay" person to provide that assistance. The AED is easy to use and will "talk" you through the entire process. It will not allow you to shock a person who does not need to be shocked, and it tells and shows the novice how to place the pads on the patient. If someone is in need of this service and you do not feel comfortable operating it, contact the Administrative Service Center at X5-5037, but only AFTER you have called 911.
