Faculty By-Laws

Chapter Seven - Other Academic Programs

I. Doctoral Program

For Ph.D. related matters, the faculty of this School sits as a subcommittee of the faculty of the Cornell Graduate School and operates under the rules of the Graduate School. These rules are outlined in the Graduate School's catalog and, in much greater detail, in the Graduate School's Code of Legislation of the Graduate Faculty. In the Graduate School, the Faculty Special Committees are sovereign with respect to academic requirements for individual doctoral candidates.

A Ph.D. student enrolled in the field of Management may be awarded an M.A. or M.S. degree with the recommendation of his or her special Committee upon passing the A examination at a level appropriate to the Master's degree. As an alternative, providing he or she has coursework in all of the academic areas covered in the MBA core courses; an MBA may be awarded.

II. Five-Year Joint Degree Program

The School permits a limited number of exceptional Cornell undergraduates to participate in a Five (5) Year Joint Degree Program that results in the awarding of both the baccalaureate and MBA degrees. This option is open to students enrolled in any of the University's undergraduate colleges.

Cornell undergraduates may apply for this program during their third academic year, but they must have a program of courses that will satisfy all requirements for their undergraduate major by the end of their third year in residence at Cornell. Matriculation will not occur unless those requirements are satisfied. Transfer students are not eligible to participate in this program.

Five (5) year applicants are subject to the same admissions' criteria as all candidates. If accepted, they must complete all core course requirements during their fourth year at Cornell and then register for thirty (30) hours of approved School courses during their fifth year. All other degree requirements for the MBA apply to five (5) year students. They register with, and pay tuition to, their undergraduate colleges during the fourth year and the School during the fifth year.

III. Other Joint Degree Programs

Students accepted into these programs are subject to the same admissions' criteria and academic standards as all other MBA candidates.

A. Twelve-Month Option

The School's Twelve-month Option is specifically for students who hold a graduate degree in a scientific or technical field. Students will receive fifteen (15) credits of advanced standing toward their MBA and will participate in an accelerated core curriculum during the Summer. They will complete their degrees with elective courses taken during the following Fall and Spring semesters.

B. Joint JD/MBA Program

This program allows a student to earn both professional degrees in four (4) years. Students must apply separately to both schools. If accepted, they take the first year's work entirely in one (1) school, the second year's work in the other school, and split the third year. The fourth year is normally spent in the Law School. The School grants fifteen (15) hours of credit and one (1) residence unit for Law School courses. Students in the joint JD/MBA Program must meet all other academic requirements to earn the MBA, including completion of the core courses and fifteen (15) credit hours of the School's electives.

C. Six-Year Joint BS/MEng/MBA Degree

Applicants to this joint program apply to the School and a graduate field in the College of Engineering during their third year at Cornell. After acceptance and matriculation, they are subject, during their fourth year, to the same requirements as participants of the Five-Year Joint Degree Program. After spending their fifth year registered at the College of Engineering for MEng coursework, they return to the School for a final year of thirty (30) credit hours of approved coursework.

D. Five-Semester Joint MEng/MBA Degree

This program reduces the time required for non-Cornell graduates with Engineering backgrounds to complete both the MBA and MEng degrees. Students must be accepted separately into both the School and the College of Engineering and spend three (3) semesters in residence in the former school and two (2) in the latter. Fifteen (15) elective credit hours toward the MBA are granted for Engineering coursework.

E. Joint MILR/MBA Program

This joint program is designed to provide both an MBA and a Master of Industrial and Labor Relations (MILR) degree to students seeking comprehensive professional education in both fields. It allows students to complete academic requirements for both degrees while eliminating overlapping coursework.

1. The program requires five (5) semesters of residency, two (2) in the New York State School of Industrial & Labor Relations (I&LR) and three (3) in the School; these may be taken in any order.

2. Applicants must be admitted separately into both programs.

3. Students have academic advisors from both schools and, promptly upon matriculation, must have a five (5) term course proposal approved by both.

4. All requirements of the MILR degree must be completed or waived by normal procedures by all students. In all cases, at least twenty-eight (28) credit hours of I&LR coursework must be completed.

5. All requirements of the MBA curriculum must be completed. Up to fifteen (15) credits of elective coursework in the MILR Program may be counted toward the sixty (60) credit hour requirement of the MBA. No courses in the MBA core will be waived, but joint degree candidates may use the normal School exemption procedures.

6. The two (2) degrees will be awarded separately when their respective requirements are completed.

7. The MILR degree will be administered by the Graduate Field of Industrial and Labor Relations; the MBA by the School.

F. Joint MBA/MA in Asian Studies

This program affords an opportunity for students interested in Asian business to combine the study of language and Asian area studies with the MBA. In this program, the School permits fifteen (15) credit hours of graduate-level coursework taken in the Field of Asian Studies to count as MBA elective credit. To reduce the time required to earn the two (2) degrees, one (1) residency unit is dropped as well. Normally, students begin this program with twelve (12) months' residence in the full-year Asian Language Concentration (FALCON) Program; followed by three (3) consecutive semesters at the School wherein the core and the MBA elective requirements are met; and then complete the program in Asian Studies in two (2) or three (3) additional semesters.

IV. International Exchange Programs

To provide opportunities for MBA students to experience studying and living in a different culture and also to bring attractive international students to Cornell, the School maintains student exchange programs with a number of quality business schools overseas. These include one (1) semester exchanges with the London Business School (London, U.K.); ESSEC (Cergy-Pontoise, France); the University of Groningen (Groningen, Netherlands); the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (Bergen, Norway); and the Hochschule St. Gallen (St. Gallen, Switzerland) as well as full-year exchanges with the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL, Leuven, Belgium) and the Universite Catholique de Louvain (UCL, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium).

In the one (1) semester exchanges, second-year MBA students, chosen through a formal selection process, exchange places with students selected by the faculties of partner institutions. For the semester of work abroad, the School's students receive one (1) residency unit. While on the exchanges, students retain their registration at their home institutions and pay tuition there. Credit hours earned in these programs count toward MBA requirements, but grades are not averaged into exchange students' grade-point averages.

In the year-long programs at KUL and UCL, both the School's and Belgian students may earn degrees if all requirements defined by the host institution are met. For KUL and UCL students at Cornell, this entails successfully completing thirty (30) hours of approved School coursework and two (2) semesters of residency. All other academic requirements for the MBA hold for exchange students.

After a year at KUL and UCL, the School's MBA's must return to Cornell for one (1) semester of residency. If they have completed all work and earned the degree at either institution, they are awarded eighteen (18) credit hours toward the MBA; if they complete all coursework but do not earn the degree, they receive fifteen (15) credit hours.

V. Employee Degree Program

The School participates in the University's Employee Degree Program. The Employee Degree Program offers regular, full-time non-academic and certain non-professional academic staff the opportunity to pursue a degree at Cornell after one (1) year of regular full-time service at the University. Employees who have been admitted to an Employee Degree Program may take courses at the School under the same restrictions as other Cornell students. Specific restrictions depend on whether the program is graduate or undergraduate, and are covered elsewhere.

To enter the MBA Employee Degree Program, a Cornell employee must be admitted to the School under the same procedures and criteria as other applicants. Employee Degree candidates must satisfy all degree requirements except residency units.
