Johnson School
Cornell University

Special Purposes, Payments for

The University has a formal policy, describing the types of expenditures that are allowable and those that are not, e.g., recognition for employees, flowers, receptions, luncheons, etc. The policy is permissive, not obligatory, and applies to the entire University community. The policy promotes the proper stewardship of University funds (of which departmental accounts within the Johnson School, as well as STAR allocations, fall) by providing general guidelines for the appropriate and legal uses of Cornell funds in support of the University's and/or School's mission.

The Johnson School has imposed caveats as follows:

1. To provide recognition for Employees who are retiring or leaving the University and have been employed at Cornell for a significant period of time. The Johnson School has chosen to interpret "significant" as five (5) years.

2. Recognition lunches or dinners which signify one-time achievements. Reimbursement is limited to costs for the Employee and the immediate Manager only.

The School does have access to a special fund, created by Dean Emeritus, Curtis W. Tarr, which provides a modest budget that can be used for sending flowers not normally covered by the Business Expense Policy. If you are aware of anyone who is in the hospital or recuperating from an illness or accident, notify the Administrative Service Center and flowers will be sent from everyone at the School. These funds cannot be used if the flowers are being sent from the department. Individual collections should be taken to cover the cost of expenses not covered under the Business Expense Policy or reimbursable from the Tarr's funds.
