Undergraduate Degree Tuition Aid Benefit
for Johnson School Staff

To encourage staff to obtain their undergraduate degree, the Johnson School announced an enhancement to the University's Tuition Aid Program, effective for the Fall 2002 semester.

The Policy, in its entirety, is indicated below. If you have eligibility criteria or policy information issues or questions, please contact the Administrative Service Center, 235 Sage Hall.

The Johnson School's Undergraduate Degree Tuition Aid Benefit Policy

Objective:To encourage staff to obtain their undergraduate degree. This policy applies to Johnson School staff who have been full-time with the Johnson School for at least one-year or have three years of part-time service.

Policy: The University benefit covers much of the cost of attending a degree program, but limits the benefit to four (4) credit hours per semester or eight (8) credit hours per year. There are staff who are interested in accelerating the program and/or attending qualified programs which may be more expensive per credit hour than the University rate.

Eligibility for the Johnson School Supplement:

The Cornell University tuition benefit reimburses up to eight (8) credit hours per year at a rate of approximately 80% of the current Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) tuition rate.

It is acknowledged that some Johnson School staff are interested and able to successfully complete more than eight (8) credit hours per year. It is also recognized that some may wish to attend an institution that is more expensive per credit hour than TC3. The Johnson School will therefore reimburse an employee for up to twelve (12) credit hours per year, and/or who attends an institution with a higher rate than TC3.

Therefore for employees in good standing, upon prior approval of the Johnson School Administrative Service Center's Director and their supervisor, the Johnson School will enhance the University benefit by reimbursing the employee for the following:

  • The difference between the University credit hour reimbursement rate and 80% of the per credit cost of the accredited institution.
  • The difference between the University maximum credit hours of four (4) hours per semester or eight (8) hours per year and up to twelve (12) hours per year.

Reimbursement: You will need to go to http://www.ohr.cornell.edu/benefits/educational/tuitionAid.html where you will find an explanation of the University's policy regarding Tuition Payment. The School reimburses over and above what the university pays once you provide the Administrative Service Center with an official grade report and tuition receipt. The reimbursement will be processed in a lump sum payment by the Administrative Service Center and is considered taxable income.
