Consolidate Your Student Loans |
|
This
is a great time to consolidate your federal student loans. Consolidation
allows you to lock in a fixed rate on your federal student loans.
The interest rate on a Consolidation Loan is based on the weighted
average of the loans you consolidate. The interest rate on the federal
loans you borrowed while enrolled at the Johnson School now carry
a 4.06 percent interest rate, but that rate is subject to change
July 1, 2003. More information about federal loan consolidation
can be found at the Department of Education's loan
consolidation web site. If you have any questions or would like
more detailed information on federal loan consolidation e-mailed
to you as an attachment, feel free to contact Associate Director
of Admissions and Financial Aid Ann
Richards.

Gearing Up for Reunion 2003 |
|
As
we await the definitive arrival of spring in Ithaca (never mind
what the calendar says; if there has been snow on the ground in
the last week, and there has been, it is not yet spring), our thoughts
naturally turn toward our favorite summer event - Reunion - which
we will celebrate June 5-8.
Our
theme for Reunion 2003 is "A Gathering of Leaders," and our new
offerings include:
- An
inaugural Dean's Welcome Reception at the home of Dean Robert
Swieringa
- The
first-ever "Sage Hall Cinema" screening of Two Family House,
produced by Al Klingenstein, MBA '82, and winner of the Audience
Award at the Sundance Film Festival
- A
talk on "Getting Organized to Lead Effectively" by consultant
Dr. Marilyn Paul, MBA '78, author of It's Hard to Make a Difference
When You Can't Find Your Keys - The Seven-Step Path to Becoming
Truly Organized
- An
Executive Education presentation on Leadership Development, by
Associate Dean Michael Hostetler
- A
special tour of the Cornell Plantations, "a living horticultural
museum" and campus gem
- An
alumni panel on "Leading in a Challenging Economy" (invited panelists
are Andrew Kim, MBA '63, of Sit Kim International; Neal Shear,
MBA '78, managing director, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter; and Delfina
Bisha, MBA '98, senior manager of Cisco Systems Internet Business
Solutions Group)
- A
"Best Budget Bets" wine tasting led by Associate Dean Joe Thomas,
who will teach us how to choose wines that will delight the client
while still keeping the CFO happy.
If
you graduated from the Johnson School in a year ending in a 3 or
8, then you are scheduled to celebrate a reunion this year, and
we hope you will make a special effort to be with us. If you are
not in a "Reunion year" this year, but would like to become a member
of our Continuous Reunion Club, we welcome your attendance at any
or all of our Reunion festivities. Summer is, in the opinion of
many, the very best time to be in Ithaca, and all of us here would
enjoy sharing a piece of the Ithaca summer with you at Reunion 2003.
Finally,
I am pleased to announce that the Johnson School Alumni Club of
Ithaca/ Finger Lakes has, through a generous donation, made it possible
for us to offer up to 20 Reunion Grants to alumni who are seeking
work and who wish to attend Reunion. The grants cover all Reunion
registration and event fees. For more information, please contact
the Alumni Office.
We
look forward to having you join us!
Risa M. Mish '85, JD'88
Director, Alumni Relations

Alumni Key to Just About Jobs Success |
|
Career
Management Center Director Karin Ash sends her appreciation on behalf
of the entire staff of the CMC for the wonderful response from alumni
concerning the Just About Jobs (JAJ) event on March 28. As a result
of alumni alerting the Human Resources functions within their organizations
and additional high-growth companies researched by staff and students,
the CMC contacted 250 companies to inform them of the JAJ event.
Alumni were also instrumental in our ability to attract 25 companies
new to the Johnson School aboard the jets generously contributed
by S.C. Johnson & Co. It is truly a pleasure to work for a school
whose alumni support and collaborate with the CMC in providing career
assistance to the Johnson students.

Johnson School Maintains Top-20 Spot |
|
U.S.
News & World Report has released its latest annual ranking of
graduate and professional schools. The Johnson School is again ranked
#16the same position we have held the last two years in their
ranking of top business schools. In fact there were very few changes
among the top 20 schools. The full results are on their web site
at www.usnews.com.
The
U.S. News formula emphasizes three primary factors: "quality
assessment" (40 percent of the total and based on surveys of deans,
MBA program directors and recruiters), placement success (35 percent)
and student selectivity (25 percent). Compared with last year, our
recruiter assessment improved (from 3.8 to 4.2ninth among
the top schools), as did selectivity measures that include GMAT,
GPA, and acceptance rate. Not surprisingly, given the current economy,
placement measures (including starting salary and employment rates)
were lower for all top schools.
At
February's State of the School address, Dean Swieringa outlined
a number of short-term initiatives and longer-term strategies that
are important steps toward strengthening our programs and performance,
as well as shaping perceptions of those who do not know us well-a
key factor in this particular media ranking.
For
more detail on this or other major media rankings, contact Rick
Sweeney, director of marketing and communications.

Sixteenth Annual Durland Lecture |
|
E.
Linn Draper, chairman, president, CEO, American Electric Power.
Corporations have a moral and ethical obligation towards customers,
community, employees, and the environment, said Durland lecturer
Draper, who is a frequent speaker on behalf of the energy industry
and holds many leadership positions in engineeing, business, and
environmental organizations. While certain recent developments,
such as the focus on quarterly earnings and the media's tendency
to treat CEOs as either superstars or pariahs, can undermine leaders'
efforts to always do the right thing, CEOs set the moral fiber of
their organizations and must act as an example for others in the
business world. Recent corporate scandals, while wreaking severe
damage on the business world and the public's confidence, will have
the long-term benefit of clearing out corrupt corporate wrongdoers
and allowing ethical companies to eventually flourish, said Draper.
