Director's Message:
REUNION 2003 - A Terrific Success!

Reunion 2003 set an all-time Johnson School attendance record with 269 participants (including guests) from 23 different classes. In addition, the class of '93 smashed the 10th Reunion record with 66 returning classmates. Johnson School Reunion participants distinguished themselves in the athletic arena, with James Eisenhaure, MBA '93, Dorothy Brill, MBA '93, and Tom Cleary '67 taking prizes in the university's Reunion Golf Tournament, and Sherri Williams, MBA '98, and Mario Carneiro, MBA '98, besting the field in the Cornell University Reunion Run.

The Reunion program featured some classic Johnson School favorites, such as the barbecue at the home of Rich Marin '75, MBA '76, where Professor Bhaskaran "Swami" Swaminathan received the Stephen Russell ('60, MBA '61) Distinguished Teaching Award from the class of '98 and the Faculty Follies Players provided entertainment. The ever-popular Reunion wine tasting was again hosted by resident oenophile, Dean Joe Thomas, and this year featured "Best Budget Bets," including some fine offerings from Johnson Estate Winery, which were generously donated by Fred Johnson, MBA '77, and Jennifer Schroeder Johnson, MBA '79.

An alumni panel on "Leading in a Challenging Business Environment" was moderated by Professor Jerry Hass and featured Dr. Andrew Kim, MBA '63, of Sit Kim International Advisory, Neal Shear, MBA '78, managing director at Morgan Stanley, and Del Bisha, MBA '78, business development manager at Cisco Systems. A lively discussion followed regarding the pros and cons of increased government regulation of businesses, future investment opportunities in Asia, and how Cisco consultants approach the process of knowledge management, strategy execution, and refining information technology support.

New events this year included:

  • Sage Hall Cinema, at which we screened "Two Family House," the Sundance Award Winning feature film produced by Al Klingenstein, MBA '82, of Filbert Steps Productions
  • A guided tour of the Cornell Plantations
  • A presentation on "Getting Organized to Lead Effectively," by Dr. Marilyn Paul, author of It's Hard To Make A Difference When You Can't Find Your Keys and
  • An Executive Education presentation on Leadership Development, given by Associate Dean Michael Hostetler.

Faculty News

Mark W. Nelson has been appointed the Johnson School's Eleanora and George Landew Professor of Management. George Landew, MBA '57, was a principal organization consultant at Chevron. The professorship pays tribute to his Cornell experience and to his wife Eleanora.

Professor Nelson joined the faculty of the Johnson School in 1990 and became professor of accounting in 2002. His research interests are in the psychological and economic factors that influence how people interpret and apply accounting, auditing, and tax regulations and conduct trade in financial markets. His recent research efforts have focused on the methods used to manage reported earnings and the effectiveness of auditing in preventing earnings manipulation. He also has focused on how biases and heuristics lead to predictable security mispricing. Professor Nelson was a Whitcomb Fellow in 1995 and received the 1998 Stephen Russell (MBA '61) Distinguished Teaching Award.

Jerome E. Hass has been appointed the James B. Rubin Professor of Finance for a five-year term, effective July 1, 2003. James Rubin, BS ENGR '75, is an expert on investing in distressed corporations and he led a course on that topic (NBA 521) in the school in the fall of 2002. He is the founder and chief investment officer of Resurgence Asset Management, LLC. The intent of the professorship is to support classes or courses that focus on reorganizations of distressed corporations.

Professor Hass joined the faculty of the Johnson School in 1967 and became professor of finance and business strategy in 1977. His interests are in corporate and capital-market finance, business strategy, and the economics of energy and regulation. His publications have focused on transfer pricing, capital budgeting, the pricing of natural gas and electricity, financing the energy industry, natural resource allocation, and merger and acquisition decisions. He was chief of the Division of Economic Studies at the Federal Power Commission and has been a consultant to the Executive Office of the President of the United States, the Department of Energy, the State of Alaska, the New York State Public Service Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, and many corporations and organizations. Professor Hass was a Mobil Corporation Fellow in 1991, a Whitcomb Fellow in 1993, and has been the Alan Krause Fellow in Real Estate since 2000.

Hass initially developed a computerized management simulation that is, perhaps the most inclusive and sophisticated of its kind. The simulation is the basis of a MBA course currently taught by Professor Seymour Smidt (who has also contributed to the simulation's development) and by Professor Hass in the EMBA curriculum as a capstone course. The simulation has also been used internationally in business strategy courses.

Bhaskaran "Swami" Swaminathan received the Stephen Russell ('60, MBA '61) Distinguished Teaching Award from the class of '98. The award, which was presented during Reunion weekend by the class of 1998, is in Special Recognition of Excellence in Teaching.

Got Ethics? Need Your Help...
As recent events have demonstrated, making ethical business decisions is fundamental to long-term professional and organizational success. To that end, the Johnson School is developing a new ethics program across all core subjects, an initiative being underwritten by a grant from Citicorp. The goal of this program is to teach effective decision-making strategies when confronting ethical dilemmas.

In keeping with the Johnson School's philosophy of reality-based education, we are looking for examples of ethical dilemmas that you have encountered throughout your career to serve as the basis of mini case discussions. Please e-mail us at ethics@johnson.cornell.edu with a summary of the ethical dilemma you faced and your decision. Our research team will follow up with you to get more detail as necessary. All references to specific individuals and companies will, of course, be omitted, and we will ensure that there is no other way to trace the incident. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your support.

Do You Speak Russian?
If so, Sergei Likharev, MBA '00, external relations VP of the Association of Russian-Speaking MBAs, invites you to join this organization. The association, founded in 1999, "unites about 75 percent of all Russian-speaking MBA graduates from 29 leading U.S. and European business schools (800 plus members)." The group's mission is to encourage the professional development of Russian-speaking business executives; to increase enrollment in U.S. graduate business programs by Russian-speaking professionals; to enhance awareness and appreciation of the MBA credential among the Russian speaking businesses and public; and to promote the employment of Russian-speaking professionals holding an MBA degree.
