Director's message:
Managing the Future and honoring the Johnson family
On April 14 and 15, the Johnson School and Cornell University will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the naming of the S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management — a pivotal development in the history of this institution, made possible by the extraordinary generosity of Sam Johnson, AB '50, chairman emeritus of S.C. Johnson, and his family. To honor and celebrate the contributions of the Johnson family to our school and to business education, we are pleased to present Managing the Future, a symposium showcasing the wisdom and perspective of today's most innovative business leaders, including:

  • Sanford I. Weill, AB '55, chairman, Citigroup, Inc.
  • Warren R. Staley, MBA '67, chairman and CEO, Cargill Corporation
  • Jeffrey P. Parker, B.Eng '65, M.Eng '66, MBA '70, chairman and CEO, CCBN
  • Jay Walker, BS '77, founder and chairman, Walker Digital; founder and vice chairman, Priceline.com
  • Abby Joseph Cohen, AB '73, managing director, Goldman Sachs
  • Stephen Friedman, AB '59, assistant to President George W. Bush for economic policy and director, National Economic Council
  • Jeffrey R. Immelt, chairman and CEO, General Electric
These outstanding business leaders will address a wide array of compelling issues including the impact of technology and sciences on business and business education; the importance of sustainable global enterprise on business and business education; the importance of leading edge research in investment education; and more. We warmly welcome all Johnson School alumni to participate in this seminal event in the history of the Johnson School and to join us as we honor our past and look forward to our future. For program details and to register for this event, visit http://www.johnson.cornell.edu/anniversary. I look forward to seeing you here in Sage Hall.

Return of Just About Jobs
Thank you from all of us at the Johnson School for the many positive responses from Johnson School alumni to the dean's request for your participation in Just About Jobs II, where we welcome New York City- and Boston-based employers who are recruiting at the school for the first time. Part one of this year's recruiting effort was on March 18, and part two is scheduled for March 30. It has been so gratifying to hear from alumni who want to give back to the Johnson School and from those who have the appropriate contacts to ensure their companies participate in this recruiting event. We have received over 100 job listings from alumni!

The goal of the recruiter extravaganza is to connect students from the Johnson School's pool of high caliber MBAs with companies of choice. NetJet corporate jets have been provided by the S.C. Johnson Corporation (a valued corporate partner of the school) and two generous Johnson School alumni, Peter Meinig and Bruce Waterfall, and will bring nearly 30 recruiters to Ithaca for the day.

Recruiters maximize their time on campus by spending six hours interviewing pre-screened and pre-selected students who are potential employees or summer interns. Students, faculty and staff mingle with recruiters during coffee hour, lunch and an afternoon reception at Sage Hall. Following the afternoon reception, recruiters board their planes and return to their home cities.

The successful 2003 event brought 25 employers to the Johnson School that resulted in 24 job offers being extended and similar results are expected this year.

If you are interested in participating in the March 30 event, please contact Karin Ash at ksa2@cornell.edu.

Second Stock Pitch Competition set for April 1-2
The second annual Stock Pitch Competition is in the final stages of preparation as the Johnson School gets ready to host eleven three-person teams from other top MBA schools in a two-day buy/sell pitch extravaganza. Judged by a blue-ribbon panel of Wall Street stock-analysis experts on the buy and sell sides, the winning team this year will take home a cash prize of $3,000 and 12 months worth of bragging rights. Last year's competition, which was co-sponsored by the New York Stock Exchange, saw NYU place first and the Johnson School place second.

For the pitches, the teams will be given three scenarios in which they will be assigned either a specific stock or industry from which to choose a stock. They have just one evening to do extensive research on their stock picks. The next morning they will make their pitches and be quizzed by judges. Six teams will move on to the final round, with a winner selected from this group. Most of the student participants aspire to be stock analysts and this competition gives them an opportunity to showcase their stock picking and presentation skills.

The competition will take place under the auspices of the Parker Center for Investment Research, a hands-on teaching center for financial analysis at the Johnson School. FactSet and StockVal software will be used by the student teams. We hope you'll join us for this great two-day event. For highlights of last year's event, see these web sites: http://www.mbastockpitch.com and http://parkercenter.johnson.cornell.edu

Recent media hits
Professor Robert Frank, author of the recently published book, "What Price the Moral High Ground?", was recently a guest on WSKG radio's one hour program, "Off The Page."

CMC Director Karin Ash is quoted in a Wall Street Journal article that focuses on the recent increase in availability of Wall Street internships for MBA students. A portion of the story cites the Johnson School's 2003 landmark recruiting effort, "Just About Jobs," and its return to the school this year.

The Financial Times once again cited the research of Professors Yaniv Grinstein and Paul Hribar in a story about the big deal about big deals-part of which (as Grinstein and Hribar's research shows) in merger and acquisitions is big CEO compensation for powerful CEOs.

An article describing the 2003 success of the Cayuga MBA fund was highlighted in Syracuse's Post Standard in early March. The fund grew by nearly 20 percent last year and its advisor, Lashmi Bhojraj, is quoted in the article.

In a lengthy expose about lying cheating and stealing, a columnist of the St. Petersburg Times uses the findings of Professor Robert Frank's 1995 book "The Winner-Take-All Society," to validate his position of why Americans want to succeed at any cost.

Robert Frank's recently released book, "What Price the Moral High Ground? Ethical Dilemmas in Competitive Environments," was reviewed by the Weekly Standard in mid-February. The nearly 2,000-word book review applauds the work of Frank and indicates the book has some great findings and is worth the read. In fact, the commentator closes the review with, "…for a university treatise that packs a serious academic punch, (the book) is wide-ranging and well written."
