European Symposium
March 21-22

"Globalization: Promises and Perils"

Throughout history there are defining moments of revolutionary change that forever alter the landscape. In the recent history of business, globalization is one such phenomenon.

It is likely part of the debate concerning globalization is driven by a partial understanding of some of the issues at stake. This symposium is designed to raise your awareness around the main threats and opportunities connected with globalization. The topic is compelling, complex, timely—and one that touches everyone in today's fast-paced and truly global business marketplace.

This is also an opportunity to connect with colleagues and fellow Cornellians from both Europe and the United States. To make arrangements to join us, please visit www.johnson.cornell.edu/alumni early in February. This year's symposium has been designed by a group of Belgian alumni led by Frederic de Laminne MBA '83. It is also, once again, graciously supported in part by the Ada Howe Kent Foundation and Henry Renard CU '54, MBA '55. For immediate information, contact Jennifer at jgsmalum@cornell.edu.

Happy New Year from the Johnson School! Here is this month's digest of news, useful information and upcoming events.

New Members of the Alumni Relations and Development Team.

This month, Risa Mish (CU '85 and JD '88) has joined us as the Director of Alumni Relations. Risa comes to the Johnson School after two years as the Director of Alumni Relations at the Law School. Among many accomplishments there, Risa built an outstanding volunteer corps, significantly enhanced Reunion programming and increased alumni participation in the reunion experience. She also played an important role in the expansion of the Law School's Continuing Legal Education program, and spearheaded many recent graduate initiatives. Prior to her work at the Law School, Risa was a partner in the New York City law firm of Collazo Carling and Mish, where she represented corporations and other organizations on a wide range of labor and employment law issues. Risa will be working in concert with Jennifer Thurston, Assistant Director of Alumni Relations. The expanded alumni relations department is a significant step forward in the Johnson School's commitment to strengthening the alumni connection—a priority underscored by the Class of 2002, which dedicated their class gift to alumni relations.

On the Development side, Marybeth Tarzian, who also comes from the Law School, will join us as Director of the Annual Fund—a key fundraising program. During Marybeth's four-year tenure at the Law School, she led the leadership gifts program, oversaw the Law School's direct mail fundraising program, and managed the volunteer-led Annual Fund Committee. Marybeth has also had annual fund experience at Ithaca College and at Philadelphia University.

Here is your chance to weigh in on strengths and weaknesses—and give your perspective on how the school is perceived—by responding to this brief survey. This is part of work begun this fall with a marketing advisory group-an adjunct to the Johnson School's Advisory Council—that includes alumni with significant brand and marketing expertise. The updated research will be used to refine the core brand message and expand the marketing plan. The committee will also work to secure the additional resources needed to aggressively bring this effort to the next level. Your input is important and appreciated. Click here for a very brief survey. Thanks in advance for your help.

In the Spotlight.

Professor Warren Bailey was featured January 16 on CNNfn. He talked about the situation on the Korean peninsula and its implications for investors on the network's "The Money Gang." Interviewed by Christine Romans, Bailey depicted the heightened contrast between North Korea ("a basket case desperate for economic aid") and South Korea ("a wonderful, vibrant economy that's doing just great"), adding that the South has much to offer potential investors. He spoke briefly about the high-tech consumer goods produced by South Korea, and about the country's ability to shake off the pervasive Asian economic crisis that prevailed a few years ago. Asked about China's potential for investment, Bailey answered, "If I could put my retirement savings into a fund that pays China's GDP growth, I'd put it all in." While the country is enjoying robust growth rates, however, Bailey added that China's current corporate reporting, legal, and governance concerns, and organizations' lack of interest in providing high returns to foreign shareholders continued to dampen outside investors' enthusiasm for the region.

In print, Professor Roni Michaely was quoted (or his research cited) in several major stories in the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal and other outlets. For complete details on this and other Johnson School media coverage, check out Johnson School in the News.

Leading with the Power of One.

On January 24 the Johnson School and the Park Leadership Fellows Program sponsored a unique one-day leadership event in New York City featuring Ken Blanchard, one of the country's leading business management author and advocate of human worth in organizations. Blanchard is a Cornell alumnus and one of the most foremost spokespersons on leadership and management. This event is part of a series he is offering across the country commemorating the 20th anniversary of his book The One Minute Manager. Blanchard's inspirational message of leadership and service was rooted in 20 years of perspective built from his seminal 1983 book. The Johnson School/Park sponsorship was only the recent in a variety of leadership-intensive activities and forums.

Dean's Trip to Asia.

Dean Swieringa recently completed alumni visits in China, South Korea, and Japan. In China, he first visited Shanghai and then travelled to Suzhou, a city that is building an industrial base through economic and technological cooperation with foreign countries and joint ventures. Dean Swieringa discussed graduate business education in China with several alumni, corporate executives, and educators. Several Chinese universities have recently contacted the Johnson School to express interest in joint ventures and partnerships.

In Seoul, Dean Swieringa met with more than 30 alumni, including Kyung-Bae Suh MBA'87, President and CEO of AMOREPACIFIC, a publicly held beauty and health products company. Johnson School alumni in Korea also include several CEOs of privately-held corporations.

(Mr. Suh is pictured here and featured in the Winter 2003 Cornell Enterprise.)
In Tokyo, Dean Swieringa met with more than 40 alumni, including corporate executives, governmental officials, and entrepreneurs. These meetings, as well as the meetings with alumni in China and Korea, provided an outstanding opportunity to continue the connection between alumni in Asia and the Johnson School, and we are grateful for the generous hospitality that we received from everyone with whom we visited.

New Chair.
Roni Michaely, professor of finance, has been appointed the Rudd Family Professorship of Management at the Johnson School. The new chair—a gift from Andrew Rudd and Virginia Rudd CU '81—embraces the Johnson School's plan to develop the next generation of senior faculty leadership, to preserve its traditional strengths in areas such as finance, and to partner with Cornell to further leverage its strengths in such areas as genomics and life sciences.

Roni Michaely's recent research concentrates on conflict of interest in capital markets, corporate payout policy, the pricing and long-term performance of initial public offerings (IPOs), and has been frequently featured in many leading business and consumer publications, including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Economist, Investor's Business Daily, Business Week, and Forbes. A 1999-2000 Whitcomb Fellow who received the Johnson School Award for Exceptional Research for 2001-2002, Michaely has published over twenty papers (several of which received best-paper awards) in refereed journals such as the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Business, and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. He was appointed a director of the Israel Securities Authority in 1998. Michaely holds a BA in economics from Tel-Aviv University, and an MPhil and a PhD in finance from New York University.
