New Professorship

The Executive Committee of the Cornell Board of Trustees has approved the establishment of the Rudd Family Professorship of Management. The chair is made possible by a $2.5 million gift from Andrew and Virginia Rudd, which they hope will help bolster the Johnson School's standing as a top business school. The endowed chair is intended to serve the needs of the Johnson School and be a catalyst for change and innovative thinking. Andrew Rudd was a faculty member in finance and operations research at the Johnson School between 1977 and 1981. Currently he is chairman of Barra, a leading provider of risk management technology and decision support tools for investment professionals. Help Shape the Class of '05

The class of 2004 has arrived and is off to a terrific start. Many thanks to all alumni who helped recruit the class. Yield was at an all time high at 58% and the median GMAT was 680. The Admissions and Financial Aid office at the Johnson School is gearing up for what we hope will be another successful recruiting season. Their goals for the next recruiting season are to attract the very best applicants, increase the numbers of women and minorities in our program, support enrollment of international students with the assistance of an international student loan program, and maintain a selective yield of enrolled students to applicants. As part of the process, staff members travel both domestically and abroad to recruit strong candidates to apply to the Johnson School and would welcome and appreciate your help in achieving their goals for this year. By joining staff at an MBA forum in your area-particularly the international venues-you can help answer any questions from prospective students who enjoy hearing your “real life” experiences.
Click here to see if we're visiting your area this fall. Please contact Rachel Giordano if you are able to help in any way.

Latest WSJ Ranking

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) issued their second annual ranking of MBA programs on September 9. The WSJ's ranking is based exclusively on a survey of 2,221 recruiters. Topping the list again is Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business, followed by Michigan and Carnegie-Mellon. The Johnson School was ranked #19 (#10 of schools with enrollments greater than 500 and #10 among private schools). Last year we were #20 on the overall list.
Unlike other media surveys, the WSJ ranking is based entirely on recruiter perceptions. The greatest weight is placed on their evaluation of 26 attributes (half about students and half about the school). In addition, the survey asked recruiters to evaluate two overall attributes, and also considered “mass appeal” (number of recruiters who recruit at the school).
While no business school should base its decisions strictly on media rankings, we take seriously any third party assessment of our programs and students—especially by recruiters—and what it can tell us about how we are perceived by this important audience. Last year we established a task force to review the results of all major rankings. That group will review the latest WSJ ranking results and consider actions for improvement. We are committed to continuing to pursue excellence in ways and on measures that matter.

A Friendly Reminder from Karin Ash,
the New Director of the Career Management Center
Building upon the outreach and informational programs developed last year, we have created a new Career Management Program (CMP) for first year students. The CMP includes a full schedule of learning opportunities that will help first year students (and MBA II's) develop the necessary skills to launch an effective search. The CMC and the Career Assistants (2nd year volunteers) are planning programs to assist students in the development of a clearly articulated job search strategy that will complement and expand upon the on-campus recruiting opportunities. But we will need your help too! I would like to take this chance to remind you, our alumni, that we are in the midst of a tough market for finding internships and full-time jobs. We would appreciate hearing from you about any appropriate MBA opportunities. I also look forward to meeting you in the future and can be reached at ksa2@cornell.edu.

Honoring the Unforgettable

As part of the Cornell-wide activities recognizing the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the U.S., the Johnson School held a special commemoration ceremony in the Dyson Atrium of Sage Hall on September 11, 2002. The event included a short address by Dean Robert Swieringa, an a capella tribute by the Sound Investments, and featured the dedication of a permanent memorial to the events of September 11. This memorial, which consists of origami cranes folded by a contingent of Johnson School community members, has been on exhibit in the Management Library since last fall. As Japanese legend has it, if one folds one thousand cranes, the gods are so pleased that they will grant the folder a wish. Immediately following the attacks, Kazuhiro Harada '02 solicited his classmates' help in folding cranes to represent their prayers for the victims. “I believe that such a traditional Japanese custom was the appropriate gesture for me to take,” says Harada, who organized folding sessions, complete with volunteer-staffed tutorials in origami technique. The project even got support from outside the school: upon hearing of the effort, an old friend of Harada's in Japan quickly sent 100 cranes that his family had made. By Oct. 27, more than a thousand cranes had been made; the final count was 1,151 paper cranes.
