Saving resumes in pdf format
Since reaching out to so many contacts about posting jobs and participating in the three Just About Jobs events, we have heard back from a few alumni and we'd like to share their thoughts:
One alumnus told us recently that he had taken a new position at a real estate investment firm. He said this about his success in finding his job: "Fortunately, I was able to network into my current position through a series of personal relationships. Kind of a long story but there were a million phone calls and emails before something stuck."
-It is important to be persistent.
-Don't give up if a contact doesn't return your phone call or email. Try at least three times.
-You can forward your original email, indicate that you know they are very busy and may not have read your previous email, and that you are still interested in talking with them.
An alumnus, who is reviewing resumes for Just About Jobs in San Francisco, made this suggestion for students: "One piece of feedback I would like to send to students: please save resumes in pdf format. A lot of the resumes I have looked at use a table in Word to help with formatting; however, when viewed (in Word) electronically, the lines are overwhelming and detract from the content. This makes a bad impression, especially at a company where simplicity of design is one of our core values."
