Fairness and Groups

BY INVITATION ONLY!

You are invited to the 13th Annual Conference on Research on Managing Groups and Teams.  This conference is jointly sponsored by the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University.

This conference will be held on May 1st and 2nd, 2009 at the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University.  Our aim in this conference is to advance the understanding of groups and teams within the organizational context.  Each year the conference is focused around a different sub-area of groups research.  The 2009 conference, and the companion edition of Research on Managing Groups and Teams, will focus on Fairness and Groups. The theme organizer and editor will be Elizabeth Mullen of the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.

Concerns about justice and fairness are ubiquitous within and between communities, social groups, organizations, and states. People are concerned with the fairness of how decisions are made, how outcomes are allocated between and within groups, and how individuals are treated within groups. Perceptions that procedures or outcomes are fair influence a wide variety of work-related outcomes including organizational commitment, cooperation within groups, and group performance. Our goal in this conference is to promote interest in research on fairness in groups and teams by identifying new questions that will drive future research in this area. Possible topics of interest might include:

  • When will fairness matter in groups and when will it not?
  • Why do groups care about fairness?
  • Effects of fair and unfair treatment on organizational outcomes and group functioning
  • Factors that influence when group leaders enact fair procedures
  • Reactions to unfairness and inequity
  • Intergroup competition and fairness
  • Restoring justice within and between groups following transgressions
  • Affect and fairness in groups.
  • Fairness in groups from the perspectives of personal, social and moral identity research
  • How groups identify and select fair procedures for implementation.
  • How fair or unfair treatment helps individuals make sense of their standing within a group
  • Justice in diverse groups
  • Resource allocation within and between groups
  • Organizational justice
  • Effects of own and other’s fairness on team performance
  • Fairness of team composition and formation
