The Latino population is now the largest ethnic minority group in the United
States according to the 2000 U.S. Census, representing 13.2% of the total
population, and consisting of 35.3 million people. Over the past decade, the Latino
population increased by 57% compared with a total increase of 13% for the entire
population. This explosive growth has generated buzz about how this demographic
shift will impact the future of business, the workplace, politics, education and
our communities. These developments and the lack of comparative representation
of Latinos in higher education and corporate America prompted the founders of
HABLA to generate awareness and create dialogue about the need to develop
leaders that understand our unique experience as Americans of Hispanic descent.
